Transcript

Welcome to Great Things Tampa Bay, the podcast about great eats, great places and great people in the greater Tampa Bay Area. I’m your host, Kyle Sasser, a Tampa Bay native and realtor. This is Episode 15, Get Your Game On!

I’d like to thank you for giving us your time. I know there’s lots of things vying for your attention and I appreciate you choosing to spend your time listening to me in this podcast. I promise I will do everything I can to bring you something awesome. Also wanna let you know that we now have express feeds. If you’re only interested in our food reviews, just do a search for “Great Bites, Tampa Bay.” If you want more of our interviews with interesting movers and shakers in the area, just look for the feed, “Great People, Tampa Bay.” And for things to do in the area, shops or other events, just do a search for “Great Places, Tampa Bay.” These feeds are listed on our website, greatthingstb.com, under the heading “Express Feeds,” up at the top there.

So, you know, one of the annoying things about getting older, growing up, and all that good stuff, is that, you know, there’s not really anyone around to play games with anymore. Yeah, I’m sure you keep track of one or two, friends over the years, but, you know, the days of going through the neighborhood and be able to throw together a pick-up football, basketball, or soccer game, are many years in the past. Everyone’s just got way too much stuff to do.

Thankfully, we got a little place here, locally, it’s called Tampa Bay Club Sport and it’s a great place for adults, young and old, to get together and play some sports. Those of you that actually know me know that I wasn’t really too big into sports in my younger days, definitely something I’ve grown into as I’ve gotten older. Honestly, I wish that I would have done it a lot sooner, it’s very rewarding and fulfilling. So, if you’re someone who’s just kind of sitting around…honestly, I spent years in front a computer and if you’re doing the same, you know, get out there. Even if you don’t really know what you’re doing, it’s worth it to get out there just to have a little fun and meet some new people.

So, Club Sport was founded in 1995, specifically as an outlet for young adults to play sports. I mean you’re pretty good up through college with being able to throw people together, but once you get past 25, it starts getting really tough, you know, jobs, sleep, kids, career, all that stuff sort of gets in the way.

Tampa Bay Club Sports has locations all around the Bay Area, from Brandon, over on the other side of Tampa, they have some in Tampa. Coquina Key, they don’t have some in the extended area, they have some affiliated clubs down in Sarasota and the like. But, yeah, they more than likely have something close to you. And they cover a wide range of skill levels from recreation, up to intermediate, to competitive. And it can get pretty competitive out there, I can tell you.

Nice thing about it, they do charge a fee, of course, for all this. They paint lines and stuff, it’s not gonna be a pro-level field or anything like that, but they do pay the referees, so you do have someone out there making calls and all that good stuff, which is awesome. They have a ton of sports available. They have soccer, which is my favorite. I currently play every Wednesday, over here in St. Petersburg, at Puryear Park, which is awesome. They also have softball, volleyball, kickball, which my wife played for a couple years there. They also have football, which I’m guessing is of the flag variety, I have not actually signed up for that yet, but I can’t imagine that they would have tackle football. Basketball, tennis, golf, cornhole, which is questionable sports, bowling, and, finally, a Bar Games League, which is Flip Cup…I don’t know if they have Flip Cup, but I know I saw pictures of beer pong. So those last few are definitely more of a game than a sport, but there you go. And, yeah, I know some of you all are probably kinda mad saying that, you know, golf’s a sport, but, yeah, let’s get real. And I say that as someone who loves golf.

So, you don’t actually need a full team to play, so you don’t need to get together, you know, 10 people to play soccer or anything like that. If you just wanna play solo, just give them a call, they will sign you up as a free agent and place you on a team. The team that I’m on, we actually all were free agents, and we started just after the last World Cup. We’re still around, which is pretty good, real good bunch of people. So those on the Moist Towelettes Soccer Team, that are giving us a listen, it’s a lot of fun playing with you guys. So, their website is www.tampabayclubsports.com, and you can go there and it’ll display all the leagues and give you all the options, and all that good stuff. Or, if you just rather just call them, their phone number is 877-820-2582.

Segment 2, “Tell ’em Twain.” Mark Twain is one of the most quoted Americans of all time. I saw this one the other day. Thought it was rather appropriate for our new modern age of yellow journalism, and it goes a little something like this, “If you don’t read the newspaper, you’re uninformed. If you read the newspaper, you’re misinformed.”

I wanna thank you for sharing Great Things Tampa Bay with your friends and family. You can share us by going to our website, greatthingstb.com. There you’ll find share buttons on nearly every page. You can share us on Twitter, Facebook, all that good stuff. If you are looking for your own great place in Tampa Bay, I’m also a licensed realtor, specializing in deep knowledge of Hillsborough/Pinellas County. Hey, everybody. This is Kyle Sasser, Great Things Tampa Bay. And we’re continuing with the rapid piece intro here. This is the second episode where we’re doing that. So be sure to go to our website, greatthingstb.com and listen up if you like it or not. This is episode 25. And today we’re talking about Mount Dora, which is a little bit of a trip. It’s a little bit further north of us, a little north of Orlando. But we do like to do car trips, day trips, and even little weekend trips. Can’t call them One Tank Trips, because I believe that is probably copyrighted, so my apologies. And if this episode gets pulled you will know the reason why. But Mount Dora, not too far away. It’s a great place to go hang out for a few days, may have a ton art shows, but, you know, I don’t wanna give all of it away from the get-go here, so here is Mount Dora.

This is another road trip episode, so I know these are a little controversial. Okay, not really, I just made that up. But yeah, so this is another road trip episode. Wife and I, we went up to Mount Dora, Florida, which is located about…I mean, I won’t say about an hour north of Orlando. The way we went, we went up 75 to someplace with a federal prison and we got off there. Yeah, it’s a pretty desolate drive. But then once you kinda cross the ridge there in the central part of the state, you know, you start seeing all these lakes, Hawaiian hills, and all that good stuff, beautiful country up there. Then, you know, we actually arrived at Mount Dora’s.

We stayed at a bed and breakfast up there called the Adora Inn. They’re located at 610 North Treemain Street. We’re gonna put the information for them in the show notes if you would like to stay there as well. And we were there…proprietors, John and Arthur definitely gave us a great stay. They told us lots of great places to go there and eat and, you know, just a little history about the town and the history of how they ended up there and became the proprietors of the Adora Inn. Yes, there was a duplex, so, like you’d go inside and there was these two staircases side by side and, you know, there used to be a wall there separating them but, you know, now it’s kind of you just have two staircases in the house, which is pretty crazy. And then, yeah, that was actually like three stories tall and had a basement. So, you know, pretty unique for Florida.

So while we were there, we were actually up there for the Arts and Crafts Fair. They have a ton of just festivals, and like art shows, and stuff like that. So kinda check the calendar if you’re thinking about going up there because they might have something that appeals to you coming up. We were up there for the arts and crafts festival which we learned was good. But I think the art, the actual just art festival that they have up there was probably more of what we’re looking for. The arts and crafts festival was a little bit more of the, you know, hand-painted signs, you know, small glass pieces, dog collars, that sort of thing. It did have some art and artsy stuff, but definitely not as much as the art show.

First day, we were there we went to Goblin Market which is pretty good. It’s located on one of the side alleys, so, you know, it was pretty fun to find. That’s good, it was delicious and hearty. The interior was decorated awesomely and it was very cool.

The next day we had lunch at 1921 at the recommendation of the proprietors of the Adora Inn. And 1921 by Norman Van Aken who is…I believe he’s a chef down in Miami. And so they had tuned the menu a touch for the arts and crafts festival. And they didn’t really have all of the normal stuff there. But we did have a hamburger, which sounds boring, but it was amazing, like a very nearly perfect hamburger. And then we met some friends later that night down at Pisces Rising, which is kinda down the hill a little bit overlooking Lake Dora. And it’s a great place, used to be a house, you know, with one of the original families there. And then it was bought and turned into a restaurant. They have a huge porch there. It’s a great place to watch the sun go down over the lake, and amazing. Food was pretty good, I think I had a steak there, and it was good. But definitely, I would put it more on the great place to watch the sun go down with a cocktail in your hand, really good time.

They also have a train, which if you don’t know I’m bit of a fan of trains, you know, brings out the inner 12-year old in me. My dad actually worked for CSX for 30+ years. He’d probably be really mad at me that I don’t know the exact number. But he was there, he worked for CSX. So I have a special place in my heart for trains. But yes, so they have a train that kinda goes round from Mount Dora to Tavares. And, you know, you can kinda just look out there, look at the lake riding the train around. It’s a good time. While we were there it was not running though, they were just using it to ferry people from parking lot into town for the art festival, but it’s very cool. You can go into the old train depot. Mount Dora was one of the first resort destinations in Florida. So when Flagler was building his railroads down through the East Coast over there and came down through St. Augustine, Flagler Beach, and all that stuff, one of the first attractions was a spur that went over to Mount Dora, so very cool.

And I also mentioned that they do have tons of festivals there. So they have festival fairs, they have craft fairs, couple of the cool ones is that Tavares is actually the seaplane capital of the world or so they claim, you know. I’m always a little dubious of towns that claim to be the capitals of something. But they did admittedly have a lot of seaplanes there. So if you like seaplanes that’d probably be the place for you to go. And they also have a wooden boat festival, so like all the old, you know, wood speedboats, Chris Craft [SP], and all that stuff which if you remember from the boat show episode that we’re personally fans of. So yes, so they have a wooden boat show festival and they get up and race the wooden boats around, and it’s supposed to be pretty cool. So, you know, I’m gonna have this kinda nudge the wife and see if we can get back up there to see that.

So yes, so that was our weekend in Mount Dora. It was a lot of fun. One thing we did go, right when we had the first little cool weather towards the end of October there, you know, when the weather kinda dropped down into the 80s, which for Florida is nearly winter time. So we went up there right during that first initial cool weather, and my wife is going crazy, she’s like, “Oh, you know, it’s so great up here. We should move up here, like feel the temperature.” I was like, “Listen.” I was like, “We did not find like some secret garden in Florida that, you know, magically the weather is just, you know, 30 degrees cooler up here.” And that was rapidly confirmed by the proprietors of Adora Inn, John and Arthur, who, you know, definitely said that it is very, very warm there in the summertime. So if you’re thinking about going to Mount Dora, you definitely would probably want to do it when the weather is a little bit cooler. If you have any questions or anything all of this information is going to be in the show notes. It’s definitely worth a trip there. It is pretty hilly and, you know, you can either go to the Adora Inn… They have another spot there down actually on the lake, called the Lakeside Inn, which is basically the old resort there. So bunch of cool stuff, lot of great history up there. And that is Mount Dora. If you have any questions or anything, check out the show notes on our website.

So again, if that tickled your fancy at all, we will have all the details in the show notes including where we stayed, where we ate at. You’ll be able to find links there. Follow on our footsteps, if you like. I would also like to add, before we get to segment two here, that we do actually have events, and meet-ups and all that good stuff. You can find the details at our website or on your meetup app. So if you’d like come have dinner with me and my wife and some other Great Things Tampa Bay listeners, you can do so.

So this segment two is a little bit of a musical interlude, I guess you could say. Before we get played out by a local musician on our outro. Interestingly enough, “Mr. Brightside,” which was a song by The Killers, which many of you probably know, never actually ever left the U.K. charts. And in fact, Mr. Brightside by The Killers was among the top 50 songs in 2017.

I’d like to thank you for listening to “Great Things Tampa Bay,” the podcast covering all the great eats, great places, and great people in the Greater Tampa Bay Area. If you’d like to interact with us, if you’d like to give us a tip of the hats, a wag of the finger, a dog poop on the doorstep, you can do so by going to our website, greatthingstb.com. And on there we have all of our show notes, history, we got some blog posts which will keep you up to date on, you know, the quick happenings, a lot of restaurants opening up currently. Sorry, that’s the dog and a cat fighting in there. Hang on a second.

Okay, I’m back from dog patrol. I’m really trying to make greatthingstb.com a great resource and where you can go and find out everything that’s going on in the Tampa Bay Area, talk with other like-minded people, people looking for good eats, you know, something fun to do, talk about local bands, local art, and all that good stuff. So that’s greatthingstb.com. Thanks for tuning in.

Playing us out today is the Ellie Lee Band, “He’s My Baby.” If you like this song take a look in the show notes, we’re gonna have links and additional information, and all the good stuff maybe. You can catch the Ellie Lee Band out and about in the Greater Tampa Bay Area. This group was recommended to me by some fans of theirs. And that wasn’t just one, I actually got two, or three, or four people who said, “These guys are great, very bluesy, guitars is awesome.” So here we go, Ellie Lee Band, “He’s My Baby.”

Welcome to Great Things Tampa Bay, the podcast about great eats, great places, and great people in the Greater Tampa Bay area. I’m your host Kyle Sasser, a Tampa Bay native, and realtor. This is episode 23, and this is a Florida Strawberry Festival versus the Florida State Fair. Thanks for giving us your time. I know there’s a lot of things vying for your attention: social media, internet, friends, family, work, and I appreciate you choosing to spend your time listening to me and this podcast. I promise I will do my best to bring you something awesome.

I also want to let you know that we now have express feeds which means that if you’re only interested in our food reviews, just do a search for Great Bites Tampa Bay. If you want more of our interviews with interesting movers and shakers in the area, just look for the feed, Great People Tampa Bay. And for things to do in the area, shops or other events, just do a search for Great Places Tampa Bay. These feeds are listed on our website, greatthingstb.com under the heading Express Fields up at the top there.

I’m a nearly 40-year native of the area, and I definitely have my opinion, I’m sure most people do, which festival or fair they prefer, the Florida Strawberry Festival which is out in Plant City or the Florida State Fair? Both of these events are pretty massive for each location, taking up a substantial acreage in the festival grounds. So they do all have kind of similar amenities. You know, they all have a Midway with rides, of course. They all have exhibits, and they all have crafts and then a bunch of carnival barkers out there barking their wares, selling spiralizers and Cutco knives and all sorts of great things. But even though there’s a lot of similarities, there is a little bit of difference and people will defend their fair or festival to the death.

So without further ado, let’s dive into it. And so the Florida State Fair this year is February 8th through 19th. So basically, I’m recording this on the 7th so it actually starts tomorrow and I drive by it relatively frequently. I saw them putting the fair rides together and all that good stuff, getting everything good to go. So the Florida State Fair, I would say their primary focus is more of kind of Florida overall. They have their own little section there called Cracker Country where they have some old-timey Florida living, like the old cabin and how things used to be.

The Midway, I feel, is a little larger than the Strawberry Festival. A lot of duplicate rides. And they also have the agriculture section where people are showing pigs and cows and all that good stuff. Pretty similar. I don’t know if this is just me personally, but the Florida State Fair always felt a little dustier, is the only way I can describe it. I don’t know if it’s just something with the soil there. It feels a little dustier. I don’t know if you’ve ever been to a Renaissance Fair, but just whenever you get home, there’s just dust and dirt everywhere. And don’t get me wrong. I mean, the Florida Strawberry Festival definitely goes the same way, but the Florida State Fair, I don’t know if it’s just because it’s bigger or just the way it’s set up but it always feels a little dustier.

So the main difference, I would say, between the Florida State Fair and the Florida Strawberry Festival, and if there’s any doubt, I do have a preference for the Florida Strawberry Festival. It might have been because I was born and raised in Dover, Florida there, so where the dinosaurs are on the side of Interstate 4. That was where I grew up. So very familiar with Plant City and the farmers there. And actually, we have a farmer interview episode coming up a little bit closer to the Strawberry Festival.

So I’m not going to try to play fair on this at all. I definitely like the Florida Strawberry Festival better. The primary difference to me, the Florida Strawberry Festival does feel a little bit more small-town, a little bit more low-key. They definitely…like I said, they all have kind of the same major keys, but the difference of…I would say that the Florida Strawberry Festival does have a little bit or has much better concerts and shows. They definitely have a knack for getting large country music acts there which is not necessarily my cup of tea. I can’t really say I get terribly excited about Big & Rich or anything like that, but if that is your thing, the Florida Strawberry Festival is definitely the way to go.

So the Florida State Fair is February 8th through the 19th, and then after that, they kind of transitioned over to Florida and they started setting up there…excuse me, to the Florida Strawberry Festival, and start setting up there. The Florida Strawberry Festival this year is between March 1st and 11th, and that is to coincide with the primary picking season for strawberries which we go into a little bit more on the interview with Fancy Farms. Mr. Bob McDowell was kind enough to sit down with me and give a nice long interview on the ins and outs of strawberry farming. It’s very interesting, learned a bunch of things there. So yeah.

So March 1st through 11th, looks like there’s quite a bit of interesting things going on at the Florida State…i’s not the Florida State Fair, the Florida Strawberry Festival. So like I said, the aforementioned Big & Rich is gonna be there. Oak Ridge Boys, Reba McEntire is gonna be there. Trace Adkins, Charlie Pride, Earth, Wind & Fire, Sawyer Brown, Babyface, and Brad Paisley. So if any of those kind of piques your interests, be sure to head on out to the Florida Strawberry Festival to check those out. Also, pick up some lovely delicious strawberry shortcake.

Funny enough, I grew up next to a strawberry farm, and really don’t like strawberries that much which is relatively humorous but there you go. I think it was one of those things. They were plenty and abundant when I was a kid and can’t say I got sick of them because I never really ate them. The only strawberries I really liked, and this is probably blasphemous to a lot of you, but the McDonald’s strawberry milkshakes. So if you ask me where the best strawberries are from, I would have to say Parksdale because I grew up next to them and Fancy Farms because they were kind enough to do an interview with me which we will be releasing in a couple weeks. Other than that, I couldn’t…I don’t like them that much. So yeah.

So Florida State Fair versus Florida Strawberry Festival. If you think that the Florida State Fair is the better show in town, I would love to hear why. Please send me an email. Go to the website, greatthingstb.com. Go to the Contact Us page and send us the reason why because I’ve never…with the exception of the fact that the Florida State Fair is located closer to a larger population. I mean, there’s only so many people in Plant City and Brandon and Lakeland that’ll make it to. So I know most people from Tampa or St. Pete, they’re pretty much gonna stop there at the State Fair versus the Florida Strawberry Festival.

If you’ve only been going to one and you’ve never been to the other, I do recommend kind of switching it up and see what all the fuss is about. Maybe you’ll like the other one better, who knows? But I know for myself, I’ve been to both many times and got to say Florida Strawberry Festival always comes out on top. So anyway, thanks for listening. If you disagree or agree, send me a message. I’d love to hear from you.

So who wants to know a fun fact about goats? So here’s a fun fact. So goats, their pupils are actually horizontal and almost perfectly rectangular. And what this does, this actually gives the goats a field of vision equating to about 330 degrees. So if you kind of put a compass on top of your head and all that. So 360 degrees would be that you could see completely all the way around you which would be crazy, but 330 degrees which is the goat’s field of view means they can see virtually everything except for their own backs without turning their head. And as you can imagine, this does give them some tremendous chances to not be eaten by all the scary predators out there. So there you go, a little bit of a goat fact for you.

So this is episode 22. We’re going to be talking about TreeUmph down in Bradenton. It was a little bit off of my radar for a while. I was actually introduced to this by a friend of mine, Mike. Thank you for introducing me to TreeUmph. We actually went for his birthday so…This was a little while ago so it’s a little delayed for a happy birthday public announcement but there you go. Happy birthday, Mike. So there’s actually two TreeUmph locations. One is I would still call it the Tampa Bay area, the one down in Bradenton. They have another one up in Brooksville that they’ve been working to open. I believe it should be open now. It had a little damage from Hurricane Irma that delayed its opening but I believe they’re open now.

The one Bradenton, though, is on State Road 70. Basically you get on interstate, you head…Interstate 75 and you head south past Ellenton, over the Manatee River and all that stuff. Get off at State Road 70 and head east and then, you know, you’ll see it down there a little ways. It’s a pretty cool place. It’s very active but it’s good for people of all ages and skills. All the way down from children all the way up to seniors. They do have varying degrees of difficulty so you should be able to match something up with your skill set and physical fitness. It’s basically sort of, like, the American Ninja Warrior things if you’ve seen that show, so yeah. It starts off easier, though. Rope swings and crawling through tunnels and stuff like that. You can basically call it an obstacle course. The cool thing is the majority of the course is set elevated, up in the trees. So they climbed up there and strung these steel cables up in the tops of these pine trees so the whole course is basically off the ground.

If you’ve done zip lining or anything like that it’s very similar. One cool thing, though, is unlike most of the zip lining tours I’ve been on you don’t actually have a guide that goes with you and is constantly hooking you and unhooking you. They have a safety system there. It guarantees that you’re always hooked into that wire so there’s, you know, no possibility of you falling off and breaking your neck. So that does allow you to move at your own pace and struggle with your own struggles, so to speak, and then they have a guide on the ground who, kind of, monitors an entire section of the course there. And if you do get into trouble, you know, you just kind of holler out to them and they will come up there and rescue you. We actually watched a couple rescues and sometimes they can hook legs around you and just, kind of, drag you to the next base there. Sometimes they actually do, like, a full rig with the ropes to lower you down safely to the ground.

Everyone there was really professional. They just want everybody to have a good time and if you go I’m sure you will have a good time. Like I said, it does start off pretty easy. Of course they have cargo nets. They have one where you swing over to the cargo net and then you have to, kind of, climb up the cargo net. So, you know, fun stuff like that and then they have the summit. Whenever you pull in the parking lot that is basically the highest section of the course. It’s tough. You have to want a challenge if you’re going to go up there. The cargo nets where you’re, kind of, switching back and forth was tough but there’s another section where you basically have these little wood blocks that, kind of, look like pencil erasers with a rope through the middle of them. They’re offset so it’s, like, one on the left and then a little further down there’s one on the right. I think you’re supposed to just, kind of, grab it with your hand and just, kind of, upper body strength your way across it. That is not my forte so I think I actually stepped on one of the little eraser blocks of wood and then instantly, you know, tried to hold and make that move. It completely fell apart on me and basically I was just dangling from my wires and just, kind of, drug myself across. It was not graceful in the least but I did finish it. I got to ring the bell so yippee for me and also after that I’ve hit the gym because it was a little embarrassing.

But, again, you don’t have to do all of the different levels. There’s places where you can cut off of the course. So if you’re looking ahead and you’re like “Eh, you know, I don’t know if I can swing that one” you can always bail. One of the last things they have there is they have a 650 foot zip line. They strung a really tall tower that they had actually built. You have to climb this tower up, ride the zip line down there. It’s a lot of fun. We were there, like, four hours. It’s, honestly, a better part of a day. You can run it as many times as you like, you know, on your pass. We’re going to put the link and the information for them on the show notes so take a look, but it’s TreeUmph. T-R-E-E-U-M-P-H. They’re pretty awesome. I can’t wait to go back.

So here’s a little interesting fact about sister city to Saint Petersburg and that’s Saint Petersburg, Russia and it’s frequent name changes. So Saint Petersburg name changed so frequently that it was entirely possible for a Russian to be born in Saint Petersburg back in the early 1900s, go to school in Petrograd, get married in Leningrad, and then die in Saint Petersburg without ever having moved at all.
